The gentle day · on foot
The easiest day starts after breakfast, on foot. Ward's Lake is about ten minutes downhill — a slow loop around the water, then on to Police Bazaar for the noise, the woollens, and the street food, fifteen minutes further. Come back up the hill for tea in the garden as the light goes.
The big day · by car
The classic Meghalaya day: out by eight, back by dark. The road to Sohra runs along the edge of the plateau — waterfalls dropping off green cliffs, limestone caves, and viewpoints over the Bangladesh plains. In the monsoon the falls thunder; in winter the gorges fill with cloud instead.
The golden evening
North of town, the hills open into grasslands and the big lake. Go out mid-afternoon, walk the meadows while the light turns gold, and be at a viewpoint over Umiam for sunset. It is the least-planned, most-remembered evening most guests have here.
The early start
On winter mornings the valleys south of Shillong fill with cloud, and from the right ridge you look down on it like a white sea. It means leaving before dawn with a thermos of tea — and it is worth every minute of the alarm.
The season
For two or three weeks each November, Shillong turns pink — the Himalayan cherry blooms along the lanes, in the parks, above the rooftops. It is the prettiest time of year here, and the busiest; if you want those weeks, write to us early.
